One of my favourite weekend destinations outside of Tokyo was the small island of Enoshima. There are three main shrines on this islet but you get to try out one of the oldest shrine traditions at Hetsunomiya, the main shrine. In front of the shrine there was a blessing circle. You had to walk through it and around it 3... More

We had a great outing to Enoshima with our friends stationed in Yokosuka. Loved watching the surfers on the drive there and back. Lots of shops and treats to try eating. Steep hill to the top, but it was beautiful and the cherries had just blossomed! Great views and scenery. Worth a trip!

During the Edo period, musicians would travel to the Benten shrine to pray for success in their performances. These days, the island is most popular with young couples who come to pray for the success of their relationships at the bell atop the island, and leave a padlock with their names to symbolise their commitment to each other. Haiku fans... More

Enoshima island is a small place near Kamakura. If you come from the West side of Tokyo, take the Odakyu train line from Shinjuku. They offer a special return ticket for Enoshima for about 1500 Yen, available at the ticket machine. Trains to the Katase Enoshima station take about 1 hour. From the station it takes about 5 minutes to... More

Enoshima island is a lovely little island an hour train ride away from Tokyo, a great place to escape the crowds and neon lights for a day. It is also close to some nice surfing beaches and the historical temples of Kamakura. We took the Odakyu line rapid express from Shinjuku to Fujisawa station and transferred there to a local... More

A bit of local knowledge (japanese speaking daughter and japanese partner living to the west of Tokyo Centre) helped here About an hours train journey from Tokyo mapped out for us helped as we had two changes to make but these were straightforward and took us through suburbia to arrive at what seemed like at first glance a typical British... Took Enoden Train to Enoshima and walked to the island. Probably about 20-30min walk in. It was sunny and the island have lots of stairs, steep hills to go, thus it is advisable to wear proper shoes & had water with you though there are many shops and restaurants there where you can easily purchase it. Signs were not that... More

Although not really beautiful or nice as Mont St. Michel, Enoshima is an island with some minor religious sites on the coast of Shonan, an immensely popular beach resort area just an hour away from Tokyo (20 minutes from Yokohama, and Kamakura, a UNESCO WH candidate city with nice temples and shrines). Enoshima is best visited together with Kamakura. Enoden... More

Enoshima Island is beautiful! There is something there for people of all ages! Visited many times with four kids aged 3-11. We never get tired of going. There is a really nice observation tower in the middle of the Samuel Cocking Garden that does require a small entrance fee. We love going at Christmas time when the garden and tower... More
