The small hamlet of El Castillo is at the far end of a horrible dirt road past the volcano park. For what it’s worth, we decided it was better to drive fast rather than slow… it was just as bumpy but it didn’t last as long that way! We arrived right at closing time (4 p.m.) but they still let... We stopped here without any expectations and were delighted with the visit. Great butterflies and friendly knowledgeable staff. Maybe a little expensive at $14 but after we saw the monkeys it was worth it! More

A behind the scenes tour of hatchling butterflies. Four separate enclosures each representing a different ecosystem. So many butterflies as if flower blossoms flying. Beauty took my breath away! More

The conservatory was amazing and so interesting. We were fascinated by how large it was with such a variety of butterflies. The guides were very informative. Definitely one of the best and educational values. More

The people were incredibly knowledgeable, the butterflies beautiful, and I even got to hold a giant cockroach! My boyfriend and I spent hours in the conservatory, asking our personal guide myriad questions about the butterflies, plants, reptiles, etc. The pictures we got are fantastic, and the work this conservatory has done to preserve the populations of the local species is... We were told to allow an hour. We spent two and half hours there. In addition to four large butterfly habitats with a guide in every one, they also have a great frog/insect habitat where you can easily see the frogs, a rain forest river walk and a nice garden. Also at the start of your visit you will see... More

We had no high hopes of the Butterfly Conservatory because it is a bit off the beaten track. It turns out to be well worth the visit if you are in the Arenal/La Fortuna area. The gardens are gorgeous, the butterfly houses - four separate habitats - well stocked and well maintained. Throughout the garden there are boards with a... More
