Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round. « less

We took the luxury bus from The Empress hotel - the driver was great and you get to learn a little about Victoria and the price includes the gardens admission. It saves you money to do it this way if you don't have a car. The gardens are beautiful and the food was great in the self serve dining room.

I was a bit hesitant to go here, but it was very nice, probably a bit boring for young kids. They give you free see through plastic umbrellas, and the rain didn't really spoil it at all. You only need 3 hours max here.

We really had no idea what to expect, only that it was worth visiting. We arrived in the morning and overheard one of the employees say that it would take about an hour and a half to get through the gardens. Not for us! We spent over 2 hrs. just in the Sunken Gardens! Then there were 4 more sections... More

If you are in Victoria, it is a must to take the drive out to Butchart Gardens. The gardens are so gorgeous and well worth a few hours to wander among the different areas. There are also 3 restaurants on site. Although I am not much of a green thumb, I do love flowers and I was mesmerized by these... More

Unfortunately it was raining the whole time we spent at the garden. But, this place is absolutely gorgeous!! We had our own umbrellas, but they had carts of them all over for everyone's use. We were lucky to arrive while the tulips & rhododendrons are still in bloom. They are huge, every color imaginable & all over the park -... More

I've seen a lot of famous gardens around the world and this is definitively one of the most beautiful. I visited early May and the gardens looked even better than on the pictures where they mostly use summer images.

Overpriced all hype. People were complaining all over the place. A guy threw up on the path and it was there still when I left. Staff was drinking, you could smell it. Nobody cared there.

I'm shaking my head in disbelief . . . a previous reviewer saying, "No wow factor" at Butchart. This is an absolutely beautiful place! Yes, the price is high, but you cannot come to the Victoria area and not visit these gardens. The grounds are clean and well-maintained. At every turn during our three-hour visit, gardeners were tending the various... More

Fee is steep, but the grounds are amazing and the gardens are well worth the money. This is a very romantic and beautiful place. If you are on Vancouver Island, I highly recommend a stop here (entire garden can be covered easily in 1-2 hours).

As part of our tour we went to the Butchart Gardens and they were stunning. My husband doesn't like gardens but enjoyed them and appreciated the work put into them. Colours, different levels, waterfalls, lakes, fountains it has everything. A must do.
