A long distance footpath, but short pieces can be walked for day hikes. In general I found it having a good surface with good signage.

Walked small sections of the SDW many times. Last time I walked from Alfriston village across Southease and onto Woodingdean, Brighton. Beautiful landscape. Have a soft spot for this area.
We love to park at the Jack and Jill windmills at Pyecombe and walk along the Southdowns Way to Ditchling Beacon, have an ice cream and return the same way.
It is a total journey of 4 miles, so nothing too taxing and you have the opportunity to take other interlinking paths to lengthen the walk and take in some...

With a history of human usage going back 8,000 years there is a genuine feeling of antiquity and "place" about the South Downs way.

I took part in the epic 100k Trailwalker 2012 challenge and I will be doing it again this year. It takes in most of the South Downs way from Petersfield to Lewes.
An absolute place of wonderment with incredible views of surrounding villages and towns along the route.
A beautiful place to cycle, run, walk and picnic. I would recommend...

Waht a fantstic place.Drove to devils dyke and could not believe the view. it was so cold. But will definatly be going back when it gets warmer. Its a national trust with lots of walks, which encompass stops in pubs and cream teas...yum. Its a fair climb up and down. but it looks breathtaking. Certainly a gem from the moterway.
We took out GSD's from the Ditchling Beacon to Lewes for breakfast, and then back again. 13 miles and they were still running around at the end. Each field is clearly posted when livestock are present (The farmers seem punctilious about changing them) and it is clearly laid out where you can and can;t walk. As we came into Lewes...

When I was in my 30's I did the whole length in 3 days. We started from Eastbourne through Devils Dyke and on to the edge of West Sussex, in those days it didn;t go on into Hampshire as it does now. The walk finished in a farmers field with no welcoming committee to greet us. But what a beautiful...
