This attraction has been constructed by enthusiasts to give the public a taste of life in a mine over the centuries. The experience lacks the polish that we are used to from other professionally organised attractions but this made it more engaging. After the underground tour (wear stout shoes!) there are all the old earth moving machines to explore with... More

This place is a quarry so a bit 'rough and ready'. There is a large display of rocks and minerals inside and a collection of ancient excavators and a quarry area to visit outside. There are guided tours which weren't available on the day we visited so can't comment on those. I believe we paid just £3 entrance. The tour... More

Very engaging and enthusiastic guide; lots of information and exhibits packed into small museum. Run by enthusiasts, this comes across into a great family visit.

The reason why i went was a nice leaflet with narrow gauge railway on it advertising a diesel hauled service and a underground mining experience. What I found out on arrival that due to volunteer shortages neither was operating. The museum attached was in too much detail and was realy for quary enthusiats. The machinery outside appeared to be used... More

We have visited twice with our 6 & 8 year old boys and have had a fantastic time. The mine tour is interesting with a guide who made it fun for the kids. The highlight is the gold panning though. I was prepared for 10 mins of searching for treasure & then having 2 disinterested kids, but I could not... More

We visited here with two friends on a rainy Sunday as it was too wet to go walking. The entrance fees are very reasonable and the volunteers very friendly. As they were running a special day with vintage diggers etc working, we couldn't go down into the mine which was a bit disappointing but we enjoyed the museum and the... More

If you're expecting a gleaming, spotless museum about mining then Threlkeld isn't for you! If you want something with character and people who are passionate about preserving a past then this is a must. We've often driven past the sign for the museum & this year, having seen a leaflet about it decided it was worth a look. We reckoned... More

We turned up at the museum last week with our boys aged 4 and 6 to find that the next tour wasn't for another 90 minutes, which meant we couldn't make it. But on overhearing our disappointment John (who doesn't guide there anymore) offered to take us for a look around. He couldn't have been more helpful and was very... More

I took my 14 year old autistic son and my 4 year old grandson there today. What a brilliant find! My son leapt straight onto the train as soon as he got out of the car, and my grandson loved the gold panning and found several bits of treasure in the stream. It was really difficult to drag either of... More

we got there to find out that we'd missed the last tour even though they hadn't gone under ground yet. We were told to come back the next day at 11.30 but if we turned up at 10 they might or might not do a tour
