I have been to Portobello before and loved it, but this time it was rainy and cold. The crowds and umbrellas made it really awkward. I will go again, but not in the rain. And I'd try to beat the crowd too.

Been there 4 times the last 2 years now, and the best shop on the street is a 1 Pound supermarket far down on the left side, if you start from the south, Notting hill gate tubestation.

Awesome way to spend a Sunday.
Everything you could want you will find here. Great food, great pubs, old records, cool shops etc.
Really recommend anyone spends a Sunday afternoon down at the Portobello Road Markets.
Take the Notting Hill Gate underground exit and it's only 5min walk from there.
