St Marys Church. The bells were peeling all afternoon. 10 Bells I believe. The lady said that the bell ringers were Lincolnshire Bell ringers. Bought a little notebook just to help with donations. The steps up to the church are a must. Take in the beautiful views of Whitby.

With its crazy seating/pews, this church has such character. So mush to look at, Always nice to light a votive candle , which I do always on every visit..

Very interesting old church. Loads of history, Interesting to see how it differed from more modern churches

Worth a walk to see it's magnificence!! Once you get to the top of the 199 steps, you realise why you made all the effort.

Amazing church with boxed in pews - no wonder Bram Stoker was inspired! Ponder the central stove to warm the faithful and the pulpit ear trumpets designed so the hard-of-hearing need not miss the Word. There are also fabulous photos on display of bygone times,to help you envisage the worship of another era. Climbing the 199 steps is a great... More

Quanit and unspoilt. We actually went looking for the gravestone of a military cousin killed whilst training another young pilot, all a little ironic as he had survived his WWII missions. Sadly we couldn't find a headstone. Nice that the church is open.

Sadly due to the recent well publisiced landslip, the usual open and free to walk area's around the graveyard is now limited to around 40%. But still worth a climb up the 199 steps.. or like I did I drove around and up the back way to the municipal car-park. Sadly as we had 1 person in our party of... More

Whilst I have been to the church before I took some friends who were blown away by the quaint interior as they had never seen family pews before it is also a very strange configuration with no proper aisle. you can also see in the back of some of the pews where very naughty Elizabethan children have gouged out names... This fascinating church is like no other I have ever visited. There are box pews and an amazing three-tier pulpit plus many other interesting features. Free to visit (although obviously donations are gratefully accepted) I thoroughly recommend a visit to St Mary's when you are in Whitby. It is next to the Abbey and can be reached on foot -... More

As everyone will tell you, its a really good climb up the hill to the church, you really have to want to go there. We did and found the friendly volunteers helpful, the church itself is well presented, lots of printed information adjacent to items of interest. Super views over Whitby, though the cliffs 'slipping' away is a little worrying,... More
