We paid full price to discover when inside that the entire section with the history of Stonehenge was closed for updating ,,I felt the admission fee was overpriced because of this.
This is a delightful building in a beautiful setting but it isn't really a museum of Salisbury, it's just a hotch potch artifacts found locally. There is no attempt to tell the full story of Salisbury and some of the items have a very tenuous link with the area. Compared to many other similar but more informative local museums, it...

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. We are sorry you did not enjoy your visit. Last year we secured 1.8m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to up date our archaeology galleries and that work is now underway. This does mean that there is some disruption and gallery closures but for this very...

The museum was under construction/exhibitions were being moved when we went, so around a third of the things we packed away. What we saw was interesting, well presented and engaging. Their stone henge materials in particular were great.
If you are into history, then there was an excellent display on the history of old sarum (salisbury) and surrounds. Many artefacts are in the museaum from that time too. If you are into fashion, there is a wonderful display of costumes of old. They are kept in semi darkness to protect the fabric, but if you can manage the...

This museum is small but perfectly formed, and contains a wealth of information from the ancient past of the local area. Everything from the Amesbury Archer to flint arrowheads and ammonites are here. Fascinating stuff.
We the previous day had been on an English Heritage tour for members around Stonhenge and its surrounding landscape which was absolutely excellent. This museum also helped to put some of the finds into perspective and those of Avebury. there was also plenty of information on Old Sarem. So worth doing the museum and visiting the actual sites. This museum...

stuffed Great Bustard [now being reintroduced the Salisbury Plain] excellent arifacts from the Stonehenge landscape, bodies and grave goods from the Bronze age burial mounds, the posoined rat discovered in the tomb of William Longspeein Salisbury Cathedral, Well worth the modest entry fee-
This museum really pulls all the stops out for its youngest visitors with wonderful craft events that get them exploring history in the messiest ways. Despite being a bit phobic of some museum displays, my kids always enjoy our visits. Even if there are no events on, the activities dotted around the rooms are great fun.
The museum has quite a good section on Stonehenge with a model that shows the solstice speeded up, easier and cheaper than going to Stonehenge especially as you can't get near the stones anymore
