It recently underwent a £35million expansion and refurbishment that transformed the museum into a world-class gallery displaying many of the city’s most important fine and decorative art works. The collection covers more than six centuries of work, but the museum is best known for its 19th century British paintings. « less

I had a couple of hours spare on a recent trip so visited this gallery. It's not on the scale of some but none the worse for that - it's a great place to spend an afternoon without feeling that you will miss things. There are some very special pre-Raphaelite paintings, and a display of empire posters was fascinating. Overall... More

Visited with my adult daughter. The gallery is well laid out and easy to navigate. Its contents are solid, if not spectacular, so while it is worth a visit, its definately not a must-see attraction. More

Visited on a day when they had a children's activity session. The kids really enjoyed the screen printing. Took out one of the activity sacks about Greek Myths while waiting for the paintings to dry. Kids had a great time! More

A variety of art work, from paintings to large sculpture. Some of Lowry's work is exhibited here. Housed in a lovely old building. Easy flow from gallery to gallery with good signposting. Excellent interactive areas for children, with opportunities to actually produce and display some art yourself. Close to central Manchester. Free admission. Toilets clean. Great cafe with reasonable prices. More

Myself and my wife spent a good 2-3 hours looking round and interacting with the art. I'm no art-buff, but this is one of the best galleries I've visited. It would have been pretty good even for our 2 very young children as there was a fun hands on part of the gallery that we enjoyed as adults! Would recommend... More

This is one of my favourite places in Manchester. The building alone warrants a visit. A mixture of old and modern architecture successfully fused together, grand old stone pillars and modern glass elevators....it works so well. As you enter there is a small gallery featuring all things Mancunian...a great Lowry of Piccadilly Gardens, album covers of the Smiths, stills of A... More
