This restaurant is a landmark. It consists of a huge cellar room. The food is (surprisingly) excellent. Be sure to try it.
They where not really interested in serving us an evening meal and I could not see a single smile in the faces of the staff. The meal was average and the "pudding" or desert a catastrophy of a half raw stuffed apple and a bit of ice cream
Famous as a drinking place for Goethe (one of about 5,217 of them), this restaurant has been in existence for around 500 years and offers a number of rooms of different sizes, although the Grosser Keller (large cellar) is the main restaurant in the establishment. An atmospheric place that served good German food and excellent beer. We had a "pot" meal shared between the two of us and enjoyed some of the "museum" exhibits scattered around the place. It's downstairs in a shopping galleria, with a statue of Faust and Mephistopheles outside.
It is so big to be friendly, I was disappointed how many people was inside. It was very noisy place and talking with friends requested to be loud more than others. Most people who take a guided tour of Leipzig will stop at Auerbach's, known for its connection with Goethe. We tried it for dinner, and it was excellent. Delicious German cuisine and beer, good service and unique atmosphere.
It is hard to immagine a more Germanic dining experience:- cellar restaurant built to last millenia; gamey food that needs a good schnapps afterwards (less challenging food also available); scenes from Goethe cover the walls; lovely examples of Deutsches Reinheitsgebot biers. Go on! You owe it to yourself!
This is a 'fancy' restaurant which has little if anything to do with the history you may be searching for. But if you want to spend a bundle on food and say you were there, don't blame me for warning you that there are better places to spend your money.
