We personally ranked this church as #3 of the churches we visited (after Gésu and Loyola). The ceiling and interior is fully decorated. The Calling of St Matthew, one of the 3 paintings from Caravage in the left corner, is stunning and a few explanations are provided. The church was built between 1518 and 1589, and completed through the personal... More

What a wonderful chapel by Caravaggio! Smaller than we expected but exceptionally peaceful. More

We popped in here on the way to Piazza Navona for some welcome respite from the crowds. It was a Sunday and the organist was playing. The Caravaggios in the bottom left were interesting-different from the other frescoes. The vibrancy and his use of light are why they are celebrated, I suppose. Well worth seeing. More

While not a huge church (in Rome terms, at least), this is a nice church with beautiful paintings by Caravaggio. As a lot of people tend to skip this church (for better looking ones, I assume), it is not crowded despite its central location. More

An Italian friend told me about this church years ago and I stop by every time I am in Rome! It is on the way from the Pantheon to Trevi Fountain (or vice versa), so not out of the way at all!! It has never been crowded the times I have visited. A must if you like Caravaggio!!! More

Three famous and magnificent paintings regarding St. Matthew are located here, between the Piazza di Rotondo (Pantheon) and the Piazza Navona. I have been to this church many times to see these magnificent paintings. It is always worth another view. More
