And to think that Michelangelo was 26 when he did this. They say that the statue already existed in the stone before it was cut... that Michelangelo only removed the excess stone. He was a pure genius.
Good to see, but theres nothing else to really do but stare at David for a few minutes and then leave. The price to get into the museum is definetly overpriced. If you need to save time, skip the line and pay double the price and get in right away with a reservation. Reservations are booked right accross the museum...

Amazing, perfect statue. All Michelangelo work is amazing, you can see it all around Florence. The visit to the Accademia worth it just to take a look of the original statue
The statue of David is well-sited, under natural light, and there is access all the way around. The many rooms of early religious paintings are a bit of a slog. We had booked online but the reserved queue was chaotic. We walked up to the door at our scheduled slot and were allowed in when we showed the booking time.
This was an awesome museum except you could take no photos! If you get a tour or download the free Rick Steves app you get to learn more about the statue.
This one deserves its fame. Astonishing level of detail, creative genius in showing to dilated veins on the hand that is held lower (right) and collapsed on the one that is held high (left), (almost) perfect anatomy.
We really enjoyed seeing Michelangelo's David in spite of the large crowds. As with many well-photographed attractions, part of the pleasure was in going to the side and back of the statue to see the stone and sling and to better understand the discussion about the size of David's head and right hand as portrayed by the artist.
Expensive and long queues and when you get there you realize you have seen photos of it that convey the essence of the sculpture in much better light. Waste of time and money, as is Florence.
I have seen photographs for years and always wanted to see this in person. This 14 foot tall marvel is a true beauty to behold. Other works by Michelangelo and others at the Accademia.
