So peaceful. Steep walk down and climb up, but well worth it.Difficult for the elderly people with us, but taking a little longer we could admire the wonderful views

Well worth the walk down from the town, the best bit is the Cloisters and garden, with the well and the arches all round.

Somehow we missed seeing this charming site on our previous visits to Assisi, but very happy to have seen it this time around. Tucked out of the way and down a steep hill, you will find this serene enclave where Francis was inspired and where Clare and her spiritual sisters lived and worked. You get a small glimpse of what... More

We had a real feeling of what it was like for Francis and his companions to follow Christ by visiting San Damiano. There are so many touristy and garish places in our world that are just money making exercisers but San Damanio had a ring of truth to it. As did the wonderful little church of St Stephano's, whose bells... More

I was too late when I got here with my love. We got to sit in the small chapel, but unfortunately we got there 5 minutes before it was closing so did not get to really see everything, but even here we both sat and enjoyed the sunset, cuddled up and just felt the amazing richness this place has to... In S. Damiano you can really see how S. Chiara and her sisters lived, in complete poverty and simplicity and you also understand why this for them meant freedom and happiness.

The walk to the Church is lovely as they caution travelers to be silent in respect for the sanctity of the site. As you pass by openings in the trees, you see a bronze statue of St. Francis seated as if enjoying the view. After visiting, you can understand why Francis was so moved by nature as the setting is... St Damiano can be very busy, so if you can, visit early or late in the day, and walk slowly through the various chapels and the cloister. There are car parks a short walk away and this is walkable in about half an hour from the town (although walking back takes longer because it's all uphill). This is a very... More
