This majestic Baroque basilica houses the humble Porziuncola, where Saint Francis prayed and died and from which he entered Eternal Life. The absolute peace and serenity of this shrine is unsurpassed, and a visit here is a privilege that no one should miss as they visit Assisi.
Assisi is very beautiful and the Frescoes are top notch. there is no better place to see Mideaval Art. St Francis' Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria del Angelli is a very special place.
it was our last hour in assisi we went down near the train station hoping to visit the place where st francis died but it was 12h55 . usualy they close at 12h 45 so we will hope to come again and visit
The ancient little church within the basilica is called Porziuncola or Little Portion, a name well known in Francisican circles. As the place where Saint Francis died, it a most sacred place, regardless of your religious affiliation.

Most other reviews rave about this basilica, and I agree it is well worth a visit.

The Santa Maria church is really one of it's kind - a church within a church. The little chapel is so peaceful, nested and protected by it's more elaborated outer church. It is really worth a visit, regardless of your religion.
Santa Maria degli Angeli is a wonderful gateway to Assisi. Great restaurants, interesting small shops, delicious local food/meat shops. And you get a sense of community in small town Italy. Walking around in the evenings, just relaxing seems to be the norm there.
This is where I felt the the closest to San Francesco. The Porzuncola --plan to get there by 11:00am and spend a couple of hours praying and meditating here. You will be healed.
