I think I heard that Volendam is the number one tourist attraction in the Netherlands. I have no idea why unless you need to buy souvenirs and stuff. Someone correct me but there is NO windmill in Volendam that everyone is raving about. It's out of town. The main town is a pleasant walk amongst the other tourists (looking for... More

We visited the Volendam area and paid a visit to a beautiful old windmill and several shops nearby. The windmill was beautiful and the guide was very knowledgable. We then visited a cheese shop (love sheep milk cheese now) and a shop making traditional wooden shoes. Even though it is geared toward tourists it was a great visit.

Volendam is an old herring fishing village on the former Zieder Zee. We were only there for about 2 hours as we were on a coach trip, but it was lovely to see. Narrow streets (with tourist coaches diriving through them), views over the water's edge, the obvious tourist shops and cafes, and also a cheese making place where you... More

The Volendam main area is kinda like a boardwalk, built right along the water's edge ( it really is a dam, big surprise). But dozens and dozens of shops and restaurants, many with really fresh and delicious seafood. A great place to stroll along and enjoy the day.

Interesting shops and eating places. Lovely harbour, small houses and canals make Volendam a picturesque area of Holland.

Volendam was a fun place I'm glad I added it to our drive. It was easy to walk the streets and lots of shops to look through with almost anything you could want.

Volendam was second (after Zaanse Schans) attraction in our tour "Two pearls of Northern Holland" that cost EUR 38. In spite of bad weather, wind and rain, we had nice time there. But be prepared that t is a very touristy place, difficult to make a photo on the seaside because of tourist groups from everywhere. It is a nice... More

This lovely town not far from Amsterdam is split into two halves. The lower town is where the shops are and is mainly used by the locals but has a few nice shops if you are interested in more normal wares. The upper part of the town is pedestrianised and cobble-stoned so don't wear high heels! It is right by... More

It is a quaint fishing village which is very pretty. However, it is overrun with too many tourist groups. I am a tourist myself, but when large numbers of people descend on a small town at one time, it just is not pleasant. Of all the towns we visited in Waterland, this was the one with the most tour groups.... More
