The Sintra tram still runs using nearly 100 year old trams. it only runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It take about 35 minutes and brings you down to a delightful little beach. Must be wonderful in Summer in fine weather to take the tram down and spend a few hours before returning after a day at the seaside. In Summer...

The elusive Electrico de Sintra is a true piece of living history. This is a rare opportunity to ride 1904 vintage J. G. Brill 9 bench open tram. Electrico de Sintra primarily operates during high summer (mid-July to September) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In 2012 trams ran every 55 minutes with a one-way trip taking 45 minutes.

Well... The main problem is that it doesn't works most of the year, only during Summer. And the other problem is that it's only one tram. Although the ride from Sintra to Praia das Maças is amazing, you might quit waiting for it before it comes.
Slow and calm. I think this is the best way to described one of the most peculiar's way to get aroud Sintra. you will see the sights, talk to people and have a safe journey... Relaxand enjoy
This is a fun and scenic way to get to the beach from town. It only runs on weekends. Sat/Sun, at least, get there plenty early. We arrived about half an hour early and didn't get on. They only run every hour. The next Friday the crowd was much smaller and we had no problem.
Do try this little gem of transport. For 2 euros you are taken down to a beautiful beach with great restaurants.

The tram in Sintra, one of the most beautiful and romantic places I know, provides for a nice journey back and forth in the area. Unfortunately, it seems the lack of money will put an end to it. Let's hope not!
Just to let you know it should be back in service. They were getting it ready last week. It looks a lovely ride to Praia das Macas via Colares.
