the town's saint. very interesting church in a bizantine architecture. it is open for public and free admission.in the centre of the town,but quite upper.
This is a truly spectacular church that is a must see when visiting Thessaloniki. Steeped in history with beautiful frescoes, the underground chamber showing ancient ruins is a true highlight. It was a lovely visit and will be back next time.

We visited Ayios Demetrios early evening and it was very busy. It's an old Orthodox church and well worth a visit.
There are few old churches in Thessaloniki as interesting and beautiful, but this is something everybody knows. Tourists arrive by the busload and by 10:00 am you can hardly move.

People of Thessaloniki believe that Saint Demetrios protects their town, and they give his name to their children. Both church and Crypt are of great interest.
