On my northern light hunt we were walking there from downtown reykjavik. It was worth it. really quiet and beautiful. watch out for the time when there is tide.
We hired a car and stayed in the centre of Reykjavik, the lighthouse is not far from the centre at all if you have a car, it would even make a nice long-ish walk, on a nice day it would be idle for a picnic! This is a really photogenic location. The beach is just gorgeous, and since it's at the tip of the peninsula where Reykjavik is (and all lighthouses are in such places, haha), it's a great location to see the northern lights, if you can't leave the city. You'll need a car though. Bus connection is awful. A-w-f-u-l!
It is just a lighthouse just outside Reykjavik centre, but worth a drive along if you have a car. You can have a wander across to the lighthouse, if the tide is out, and the views are superb.
