This was a great train journey. As recommended by many others, took the train up from Freshwater and the Skyrail back (could be the other way around as well). I agree with previous comments, you have to plan your day well as times are limited. Didnt even think to ask for a window view (not sure if you can) but... More

This a must do for any visitor to Cairns. We chose to go up in the Kuranda express and return by Skytrain over the rainforest canopy. Both journeys were incredible. From Freshwater station, the gallant little Express chugs its way bravely up the increasingly steep climb, through long hand carved tunnels in solid rock, across the outstanding and astonishing Stoney... Its more expensive then the sky rail. If you have extra money to splurge, then go for it. Otherwise you can see the rainforest too from sky rail.

The time table is not friendly as it only goes in one direction twice a day and you need to be at the right end at the right time. So make sure you plan your day well

The train trip up the the village is overrated. Yes the history of the building of the tunnels, the line, and the people involved in the process was informative. The view of the Barron Falls would be spectacular if the rains were high and overflowed the dam, otherwise average. The overlooks from the train of the city, harbors, and mountains... More

We took the train up to Kuranda and back by the skyrail. Kuranda was a small hippy town. We shopped and bought souvenirs. The rain foreast walk was okay. There was not a lot to do in Kuranda. The skyrail down was interesting and the view was good.

Do take the train up to Kuranda and then back by skyrail! The train was built decades ago and I think runs on diesel -- I rode on one of these back in my high school days only! Now that brings back old memories. Sit on the right hand side of the train, for when it makes a some 90... More
