It is a place of worship and prayer.St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul’s Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life. « less

After strolling along the street in the morning we noticed that evensong was on at 5pm and decided to visit. We both enjoyed the music and song with a choir of young men and voices soaring to the heights of the Cathedral roof. Would recommend

While there are thousands of churches and cathedrals all over the world possibly way more impressive and grand, this is a must visit on a trip to Melbourne as it stands gloriously in the heart of the city. Walking inside takes you back a few centuries and you can feel the serene heavenly essence echoed throughout its walls.

If you enjoy beautiful churches and appreciate leadlight, then you will love this amazing cathedral. It is also a very peaceful environment and memorable to visit this very iconic historical site. The cathedral is free to visit although many offer a donation while there as I did.

We took my father to the healing service on a Tuesday evening. ( He is doing amazingly well I might add since!) but it was a lovely attractive atmospheric place from an historical and architectural point of view as well as spiritual.

Wow what a lovely idea to privide a free tram for visitors, we had such a great time, we went round the loop completely once to get our bearings and see what is what then we just hopped on and off most days, it was lovely, we got chatting to lots of interesting folk on there travels.

The cathedral is worth seeing, especially if you're from Christchurch and you miss cathedrals. Very interesting and lots of informative brochures.

Being Australian and spending a lot of time abroad,Australia isn't the best place in the world and while this cathedral is nice,if you are European you won't really feel much about it.

Since I stayed in a hotel near Flinder Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral drew my attention as it was almost opposite Flinders Street Station and we used to board the free shuttle bus from its terminus which was just in front of this church. Since all tourist information brochures mentioned St Paul's Cathedral as a place of tourist attraction,I decided... More

This is a must see for any tourist, we don't have many old buildings of interest in Melbourne or in Australia for that matter (we are too young). This Cathedral is really beautiful and well maintained I visit it every time I go into Melbourne.

A most beautiful sanctuary in the busy heart of Melbourne. Attended Evensong, and can recommend. 5.10pm Tues-Fri during school terms.
