It is an easy short walk along the creek where some of the pups surf down and then scramble back up. Then you reach the waterfall. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall was crowded with seal pups frolicking, playing, diving, wrestling and resting on the rocks.
Seals, seals, seals up close and personal. Great viewing. The seals are not active though - they come on shore to rest. Would recommend a trip to see the seal pups a bit out of town if you have the chance.
The site that greats you at the top by the waterfall is just AMAZING. I couldn't believe how many baby seals there were and so far up the stream. It takes about 10 minutes easy walking up there but definitely make sure you get all the way to the top as it will keep you mesmerised. We did not want...

stopped for a quick photo and we were still there 45 minutes later as just fascinating to watch the baby seals learning to swim and generally shuffling about.
This is a must do. Park on the road and look at the adult seals on the rocks but you must walk up to the waterfall and see the pups. It was a 10 min easy walk and then we came across a waterfall with more than 100 very very cute seal pups playing in the pond and in the...

A good view of the seal colony. A good add-on if visiting the seal nursery at the Ohau stream waterfall.
Another on the'must-see' list of attractions. We arrived at the colony on a wild & blustery day but there were seal pups everywhere swimming up the river to the sheltering pools. The track up the side of the river can be slippery but there are good places to stop and view the animals in their 'nursery'. The signage about the...

It was good to see so many large seals so close and we were fascinated watching them tumbling around in the kelp and rock pools. There are areas to view the seal right alongside the road so access is not an issue. It is only 5 minutes from the waterfall with the seal pups.
After you see the seals here, you won't bother to 'wow' at those in Milford Sounds or Abel Tasman National Park. The number alone is not comparable. Here you can see all sizes and age groups of seals, all kinds of activities going on (sunbathing, hooping from rock to rock, swimming, wrestling....). And you can watch as long as you...
