I don't miss an opportunity to check out an observatory tower while travelling. CCTV Tower, compared to the sites in the historic center of Beijing, feels like an unloved child of the tourist circuit (whether Chinese or foreign). I had a great time getting views of Beijing from the top observatory deck. It is open-air, allowing for glass pane-less viewing/photos...
