It's a good drive from Beijing but you'll struggle to find a more awe-inspiring experience than climbing the wall at Mutianyu.

nice views, but crowded. If you want to buy something at one of the souvenir shops, make sure to negotiate on price (start with about 10% of the announced price, in many cases you get it)

I loved visiting the Wall and had been looking forward to it for years. We were fortunate to have a beautiful day, and the views were terrific. It is fairly strenuous walking since you need to go up and down stairways and we had to ride a cable car up, but thoroughly enjoyed the Tobaggan when leaving.

I have been to this section of the Wall twice. If you are lucky to visit on a clear day the views of the Wall snaking over the mountains are amazing. Facing the Wall, walk to the right to the 'older' section - it is well worth the hike.
