The national monument of Indonesia is based on a lingga, known by locals as ‘Sukarno’s Last Erection’ or simply Monas. An icon of the city, how it relates to Indonesia’s pollution, corruption & open sewrage requires some deeper thought. It is divisive along national allegiences, locals are proud of it, Malaysians & Singaporians ridicule it. Situated in Merdeka Square (Freedom... More

I visited Monas around 6pm local time. I did not get a chance to go up to the top of the building since there is quite a number of reviews mentioned visitors can catch a splendid view of Jakarta up there. We just took some photos with the monument and walked around the park. It's nice to see a lot... More

It is still an important landmark of Jakarta despite that there is only a monument/tower at the centre of a park. With its big land, it serves as a recreational place for local people with families having fun there. A good option for kite flying activity too. More

Local youngs and olds like hanging around this monument. But that attracts me is the 35 kgs of solid gold made flame. We had fried-rice at the entrance as local had have. Price was Rp 10,000 with almost nothing inside, but taxi driver said normally they are getting about Rp 7,000 to Rp 8,000. Anyway, its not too much difference... More

It's a place where kids can rent bikes, ride around, or buy an inexpensive kite to fly - in open spaces around the Monas. Lots of people are there, whether just to hang out, play some basketball or soccer. More

The Monument, though centrally located, is accessible from one side only, through a quite long underground passage. The fenced 'park' has got very few gates and the composition of paths does not really make them easy to find. Considering tropical heat and rains - could be even dangerous for visitors. Views - more interesting than beautiful or clear. Smog and... More

Monas is Jakarta landmark. Jakarta use it as its symbol. It has gold on its top. And you can see jakarta from the top of the building. And also it has a museum in it. The first national flag is store in Monas. More

Very good diorama, slightly poorly lit. Nice views out to the urban city from the centre of the grassy/woodland centre of the park...however I broke my foot walking in the woodland, be careful! More

To understand the people, foreigners should understand their history. Not only is the monument an architectural beauty but inside it has a timeline of the unification of Indonesia that puts it in perspective. When you come down the stairs after buying your ticket, proceed as with most everything else here to the LEFT. This will take you in ascending order.... More
