One problem Indonesia does severely struggle is building preservation. Unlike in Europe where old buildings are well preserved. Luckily, in Semarang they maintain Gedung Lawang Sewu. I presume it was one of central goverment building (I forgot what the tourguide explain to me).
To go here, take taxi for less than 10 minute and less than 2 dollar from semarang...

This great historical building was a nice place to visit, not as scary as peoples told, but you still can feel the atmosphere when inside the building especially at night. Recommended place to visit for young people, but must be with the guide or you will get lost inside there.

It's the most famous landmark in Semarang and very well preserved by the government. Take at least 2 hour to have a quick tour in there and don't miss the underground tour!

like: can capture beautiful pictures with oldies background. full and clear explanation from the guide, not too expensive ticket, love the basement tour where we can see the most spooky site at lawang sewu.
dislike: no parking space, not well maintained.

Any visit to Semarang is not complete without a trip to Lawang Sewu. It is a landmark building built by the Dutch in 1907 but made infamous by the Japanese in WWII. Asia has a lot of memories and monuments from the Second World War, but I found Lawang Sewu one of the most emotionally moving.

It is Semarang's ultimate landmark building with Tugu Muda Park Roundabout next to it. Due to its size and numerous doors, it got its name Lawang Sewa ( Thousand Doors).
Only for old building lovers, there is not much special attractions offered, only a visit aroud the building and dark and wet dungeons.

The main building was being renovated when we were there but just walk around the back to the uninhabited old building. We had a good guide (they are at the front entrance).
