You can drive up the hill to have your photo taken by the sign, or go down to the river and look at the very tacky touristy market, but that's about it. If you are passing through on the way to the Opium museum, which is well worth a visit, then it's a good place to stop. If not, don't... More

Not much there except the wonderful view overlooking the confluence of the rivers and the other countries' borders. A real tourist trap with lots of stalls selling everything imaginable. We felt really sorry for the poor Thais who were trying to make a living in this setting. Best to but at least one or two things we recommend. More

the golden triangle is worth a look although not much to actually see, you can go to the river and see the 3 points of the triangle. burma, thailand, laos. there is a plaque there that points to the 3 countries. More

Tired, touristy, a place to avoid, really. However, Chiang Saen is worth visiting, so you might as well stop here en route. More

The only reason I would go to the Golden Triangle is to visit the Hall of Opium which is managed by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation. Ban Sop Ruak - which is what this place SHOULD be called has become nothing more than a Tourist Trap. A new Buddha Image perched on top of a boat-like structure stands out in... More

Finally reached the Golden Triangle after a long trip. Glad I have been but I don't rush to recommend it. More

The site at the confluence of the Mekong River and a tributary is interesting. The town, as many have mentioned, is very touristy but it is worth visiting the Opium Museum. Besides information on the history of opium growing in the region, there are some very good exhibits of all kinds of implements used in the growing, harvesting and consumption... More

Don't get roped into the whole Golden Triangle thing. There is nothing special or exotic about this place. It's just a tourist trap. If you want to have your photo taken next to a sign that says"Golden Triangle" and buy overpriced crap souvenirs, then come here. Otherwise save your money and your time. More
