If you want to see the great castles of Japan you will be disappointed by this one. It is almost all brand new. Maybe a place to take the kids but not a way to try and get in touch with Japanese history.

The reconstructed Kanazawa Castle is a marvel of construction. It was only recently rebuilt and is well worth visiting. The vast store house has been built authentically and using traditional methods, with vast beams and heavy timbers and long, open halls which were in the old times used for storage. The defensive mechanisms are interesting and there are some great...

Only costs a couple of hundred yen to enter but if you have ever been inside a castle in Japan, I would say save your yen for lunch. Great for pictures from the outside, though! currently, the garden around the castle are under construction and won't be done until the fall. Kind of a letdown since I was looking forward...

Kanazawa Castle is lovely to look at, but inside gives you insight into building techniques using wooden joints only. Very interesting.

Worth the uphill trek to see the vast expanse of this castle and to see inside the gates. Renovations currently taking place. There is a fascinating cross section of a wall which shows you how the walls are built - filled with stones! The wooden and metal doors - new ones - on the gates are stunning.

Only the gate is original, the rest is reconstructed. Interesting to walk through the grounds, but if you don't have time, you haven't missed much.

This place is rather impressive to glance at but when you start walking around there's really only a lot of big walls and a few reconstructed buildings. It would be easy to coast around here in ten minutes and head for something else.
However we were lucky enough to accept the offer of one of the free volunteer guides who...

Hard to find an original castle in Japan, being timber structures they tended to get burnt down during local battles. The government is spending a vast amount of money and time reconstructing this castle using craftsmanship of a bygone era. There is plenty of English captioning, videos and interactive listening posts. We found this very interesting.

In September 2011, my husband and I visited many places in Kanazawa as part of a contest. While we did not go inside, we did pass by Kanazawa Castle on the way to Kenrokuen Garden; in fact, it was across the street! I love history, so I was fascinated by the castle's and the garden's past. I highly recommend reading...
