The shrine is located in serene atmosphere in the midst of nature and its intricate carving decorations are very impressive. If you could learn the history of Tokugawa shougunate before your visit, you will find the shrine even more impressively. More

A lot of people come visit Nikko because of these temples. Unless you are a major temple fan, it is better to extend some of your time in Nikko to visit the other places such as Chuzenji, Kegon Waterfall and Ryuzu Waterfall. Entrance to all these complexes is 1000yen (if you did not get the World Heritage Pass). It is... More

To start with, this is a big shrine and probably one of the most famous ones in Japan. Having said that, I am not a huge fan of Japanese history or into temples much, (one temple a day is enough kinda guy... so to speak), so I did not find it that special after visitng many in Tokyo. Still you... More

Nikko itself is a nice place to get away from Tokyo for a days tranquility. A must place to visit as it is so different from Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo. A large shrine complex is spread over the hills in a forest. When we visited in early April there was still snow piled up around. Ski resorts are not very... More

I'm not really into shrines but it's beautifully maintained and I love the large cedar trees lining the entrance to the shrine. The walk there is very peaceful and enjoyable. More

This UNESCO World Heritage site is at most a 2.5 hour train ride from the Tokyo Asakusa station via the Tobu train system (take exit 4 from the Asakusa subway station, and the Tobu train station is visible once you reach street level -- it's at the same intersection). The Tobu "World Heritage Pass" is a great value (covers transportation... More

Nearly everyone who comes to Nikko is bound to visit Toshogu Shrine, and rightly so! Even people who are not really into temples, or who have seen enough during their travels in Japan, will find something special here. If you come by car, you'll drive through the town centre and up a side road sloping up, which looks like it... More

A nice one day trip out of Tokyo. We bought World Heritage Passes in Asakusa on the Tobu line. The ticket is 3,600 yen and you are allowed on the slower trains. 2h15 to tobu-Nikko and about 2h40 back to Asakusa. It also includes entrance to two shrines and one temple. Nikko was very nice. We walked from the Tobunikko... More
