Incredibly interesting and entertaining. Take a guided bus tour, price includes the bus ride and admission to all eight sites that make up "The Hells". Fascinating variety of these muddy, steamy, and sometimes stinky natural wonders. Great exhibit of crocodiles and a few other zoo animals as well. Great for the kids! More

Umi and Oniishibouzu were best, but we enjoyed also all others except the zoo. That place tortures great animals. More

If you do the hells, And it is worth it, I wouldn't recommend to buy the pass. Only 2 out of the 8 are worth it! Basically, go to Umi-jigoku which is the best by far. It has the blue, green red hells, a lovely greenhouse and you can try the eggs and corn. Then head to oniishibozu-jigoku -which is... More

Thet were why we went to Beppu for a day. We might recommend staying in Oita and just traveling to Beppu to see them. The zoo elements were all poor. They seemed poorly maintained and we felt sorry for the animals. They "bottom two" were better maintained. Don't forget to use you bus pass to get a 200 yen discount... More

Since eight years I was dreaming to go to Beppu's Hells some day and now I got to see them finally. The Hells itself are so wunderful, but at some of the Hells they had small animal parks which was very sad. African Elephant couldn't even turn around himself... It's a shame... More

many different hot springs of varying colour, temperature and sulfur content. Interesting walk, and eye opener for me as my home country has no volcano nor hot springs. visiting all the hell hot springs can be very tiring as each hot spring park as huge areas for you to cover, be prepared for alot of walking. Can take up to... More

7 of the hells are located at Kannawa take a bus from outside Beppu Station mountain side. This time we used bus 41, but many numbers go there. To use the bus take a slip of paper from the machine on entry. It will give you your starting number. When you get off the price for your starting number will... More

Yama Jigoku and Oniyama Jigoku both feature animals living in shameful conditions. Yama Jigoku has a small zoo with a variety of unfortunate creatures including an African elephant who is kept in a concrete pen that is simply an open air pen with a locking chamber behind. The elephant does not have a soft place to rest and needs at... More
