The building is lovely and quite impressive in the middle of central Manaus. The square in front of the building (Praça Sâo Sebastiâo) is quite lovely and very pleasant at night. Definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately, the guides and the staff at the place are not only indifferent, but interfere with the beauty of the place. Please fire all these... More

Architecture was amazing. But guide was young and inexperienced. She seemed a bit bored delivering the spiel in heavily accented English - rather hard to understand.

The visit is worthless, you just see the opera house and the first floor and the guides not only know less than what you'd find on wikipedia but have a very limited command of English.

I wonder how they stayed cool back over a hundred years ago during concerts. I think that they opened all the doors and windows. Would like to have experienced the natural ventilation.

One would not expect Paris-style of theatre in middle of Amazon. It is worthwhile to pay for guided tour.

We knew of the fine building constructed in a small jungle town at the turn of the last centurary but it exceeded our expectations. The quality of materials shipped out from Europe suggested the massive wealth of the rubber barons. Inside there were frequent formal tours in different languages and we were rather glad we had just missed one because... More

The history of the Opera House, now Theatro, is super interesting--was established during the rubber boom at the turn of the century. Rubber Barons in Manaus had the Opera House designed and built with the finest materials money could buy--marble, italian chandeliers, etc. to show their opulence. It fell into disrepair and disuse after a British diplomat snuck out seeds... More

We only had one day to explore Manaos and knew that the Opera House was on our 'must see' list. We arrived after lunch and bought tickets for a tour in English. We were told, by an indifferent clerk, it starts at 13:50. I asked "One fifty?' to make sure and she replied "One fifty". So we had a leisurely... More

Our one evening stay in Manaus coincided with Manaus Opera Festival, and took advantage to watch an opera in the big theater. Performance was avergae at best, the building glamorous, but not strikingly different from several counterparts in Europe. Also beware: the floor is airconditioned to arctic temperatures during performances, and make sure to have sweater or pullover handy if... More
