We are in our 70's and the long walk and the many stairs, only to see Buddhas with their faces destroyed was not worth the journey. We had previously visited the earlier Grottos at Datong and they were magnificent, a far better option than the Longman Grottos

The whole area is beautifully laid out and the walk along the river is very pretty. The main grottoes are hugh and well worth seeing. A bit of walking involved but it's flat except for when you go up stairs to get a closer look at the statues. If you're Australian don't bother getting the peony seeds, you'll never get... More

Very popular with Chinese, about a mile of niches with carved Buddhas miniature to Gigantic, You can take a boat back to start for extra 10-20 Yuan.. 4-8 bucks. Expect several 'opportunities' to have your picture taken with and by Chinese visitors if you're Caucasian.. it's nice to be popular.

The entrance fee is 120 yuan to enter and expect large crowds. The grottoes are on... More

The Longmen Grottoes were well worth the trip from Xi'an. The Buddhas were unlike anything we've ever seen- very extraordinary. We were staying in Xi'an and took the high speed train to Luoyang to visit them. It was tricky, but not impossible. The Xi'an high speed train station is located outside of the city- you can take the subway there... More

This was like Disneyland - we went in April during the peony festival, which we didn't realize when we booked the trip. There were so many people there that you literally just followed the person in front of you throughout the entire place. Very disappointing from that stand point. I believe what the location has to offer on a quiet... More

Out family enjoyed this site and it is well worth visiting for a few hours, as it covers quite an area. We took taxi out there from outside Christian hotel, and agreed to a 40rmb flat fare. Meter taxi on way back cost 33 so that was about right. Had to walk a gauntlet of tourist shops before getting to... More

A testament (yet another) to the amazing things ancient Chinese accomplished. The many hundreds of smaller grottoes are interesting but the central attract, a near 6 story Buddha, is just remarkable. Worth the effort, but lots of walking and climbing involved.

The cave carvings of Buddha were very interesting. We took a cab from our hotel. When we were ready to return none of the cabs wanted to take us back because of the distance so we took a local bus. So plan your transportation in advance.
