You should really take the boat tour, it's like 1h and half tour. They will show the different islands and even let you have a little walk in one.

The lake used to be a valley before the 1960's eruption of Arenal. It is now part of a power development that feeds electricity to most of Central America.

The drive is a bit crazy but worth it. So lush and green. Climbed a small mountain to see an amazing tree and an amazing view of this lake. Found out we could have actually drove to the top.

We had an exclusive tour from Riu Palace to edge of Lake Arenal. Good Adventure Tours did a wonderful job. The Butterfly garden was much more than butterflys, although that was great. We kayaked a ways on Lake Arenal. We contracted with Desafio but they subcontracted with another group. Our guide was not particularly helpful or knowledgeable so it was just kayaking down the lake and back. We were kayaking against the wind coming back, too. The scenery around the lake is lovely, though.

Part of our transportation to relocate from Arenal to Monteverde was a ferry across Lake Arenal. Beautiful views of the volcano from the boat. Huge lake !
