I wouldn't hesitate recommending visiting Ijen. I went with my 11 year old and it is just stunning.
We hired a 4x4 from Ketapang (the ferry port on Java from Bali) for 450,000R for a 4am start getting back to Ketapang at about 11am, staying in the Ketapang Indah hotel (which is excellent) The bus from Ketapang to Dempassar in...

It's less touristy than the Bromo volcano so if you are in the neighborhood and fit enough to walk very steep hills, this is a must! Check...

This was a nice, only slightly strenuous, hike up to see the crater lake and the miners carrying baskets of sulphur down the mountain. Views were amazing and a unique experience.

This is a once in a lifetime experience! It's the world's largest, sulfuric, volcanic crater. The exact color of the turquoise water is indescribable, and only more amazing due to the constantly changing swirls of bright yellow sulfur snaking across the surface.
It IS a challenging climb up (and down) and even healthy-looking 20-ish guys were panting. I'm overweight and...
