This small museum has a wide variety of permanent works as well as rotating exhibits. While we were in Monterey, we visited it for the first time. It is well appointed. They had a good show of Matisse's works as well as a nice showing of Van Hoesen's pieces which we thoroughly enjoyed. They also have a few sculptures by... More

What a great small art museum with a significant collection of early California painters, many of whom had called Monterey home at some point in their lives.

Well worth the visit. Very comfortable and attractive building; friendly staff. Surprising display of the work of Henri Matisse. Display of the work of Johnny Apodaca, some of whose work reminds me of Gregory Kondos and Wayne Thiebaud. Nice and thorough display of the work of Beth Van Hoesen (etchings and drawings), which I especially liked.

This review is for the La Mirada location, which we prefer due to the setting in historic buildings and grounds. However you can get in for the same ticket to both the La Mirada and the Pacific street locations on the same ticket, so if you have time, do both. Outstanding setting, very romantic, nice tour, like a little slice... More

Monterey Museum of Art has two locations. If you pay for one you get to go to the other location free. One is right downtown among the historic buildings, the other is La Mirada--not far from the freeway and college. Exhibits of California's Bohemian artists and Impressionist artists as well as up to date art works by contemporary artists.

The hours of operation are limited so call ahead. Certainly a worth-while stop along the way. Located within the city so walk in and check out the displays.

Loved visiting both galleries on a wet Sunday - the rooms are spacious and the art well presented. I totally loved the La Mirada house and garden and the Chuck Close exhibition is stunning - great large pieces demonstrating almost every printing process there is and a great video. I now understand why this man is a great American artist,... More

There are many great museums of Art in America. The Chicago Art Institute comes to mind...or MOMA..... It is unfortunate that a community with a great many artists and rich people can't do better than this.

This is an excellent and well organised art museum- located on two sites. It's well worth visiting if you have an interest in art. At 559 Pacific Street, you'll find a gorgeous old building in a delightful garden setting. I recommend you check their website and join their e-mail list, so you can find out what's on display. The displays... More
