The sanctuary is tucked in a residential neighborhood. If it weren't for Google Maps we would have completely missed it. We were there early in the overwintering season, so there wasn't much activity. But with the help of a docent, my family was able to view thousands of butterflies clustered together in the trees. There were a few fluttering around... More

It is an easy place to see the butterflies overwinter, right in the city of Pacific Grove. Nice walkways and park like setting.

Even though there weren't thousands of butterflies flying around, there was still a great many fluttering about! Very peaceful and beautiful!

This was one of favorites! When you pull off the road to park and see the small sign you don't expect much, but what a wonderful surprise. There are some signs about the number of monarchs and information about the migration of these butterflies. They have guides to tell you even more. When you begin to walk on the trail... More

not too many butterflies to see at this time. Heard there was another place to see them but couldn't find it.

Timing is everything...only go if the temperature is at least mid-70's; below that they are hibernating...around high 60's/low 70's, there was some flitting around and you could see the other hanging out in the branches...it's about a 20 min walk through residential neighborhood if you're walking up - all up - from Pacific Grove; it's a nice little park, but... Visiting the Monarch Grove Sanctuary was a magical experience! There were enough natural butterflies to wonder at:) We visited on Friday evening and then we went again on Saturday morning for three hours! Saw two pairs of butterflies mating. The weather was unusually warm so watching the butterflies was idyllic. Our visit brought to my memory a book entitled "The... More

This was one of the must-see places in our US itinerary as we had read about the butterflies and seen TV programmes about them. We visited when the butterflies were active, in warm sunshine, and it was amazing. The site is a fairly small grove of trees and shrubs which are attractive to butterflies (obviously!) and some extra shrubs have... More

We went around lunchtime and saw tons of butterflies in the grove. It was beautiful! We were lucky enough to see some butterflies mating!! there were docents around for discussion. It's a free activity and very nice.

Reading these reviews its easy to see that timing is key when visiting the sanctuary. Who knew that the best time to see butterflies in Monterey was in the wintery months? But today was the warmest day yet in Monterey - it almost got to 65 degrees this afternoon - and we were rewarded with amazing photos and a butterfly... More
