This is a great drive. It provides excellent views of the desert valley but it also is very curvy. So be prepared to be a bit car sick. It straightens out once you climb up the hill. Also, if it is hot out make sure that your car is in good condition or you might get stuck.

Views are to die. Started in Palm Desert and went to Banning. Lunch in Idyllwyld. Pay attention to road conditions and shoulder!

We travel this highway frequently from Temecula through the beautiful Anza valley and then up over the mountains -- it is a beautiful drive. It is a windy two-lane road, so be careful, and put the passengers who might get car sick in the front seat! Be sure to check if there's any possibility of snow, as chains are sometimes... More

Coming from Colorado, the scenic drive was not as visually breathtaking as I am accustomed to, yet the desert was beginning to be in bloom and the roads seemed safe and well marked.

This makes for a nice change from shopping in Palm Desert. You can see for miles from the road and the lookouts. The traffic is fairly thick though so we felt "chased" by people following too close on several occasions. Idyllwild has good restaurants, galleries and shops.

Our family enjoyed this drive recently. It was beautiful to be up in the mountains. It can be very twisty and turny, so if someone gets carsick this wouldn't be a good experience. You also need to have an attentive driver who is willing to focus on driving and realize they won't see nearly as much as the passengers in... More

I was a little anxious about the drive on the Pines to Palms Scenic Byway because I had heard that the roads were scary! No doubt, they are a bit terrifying but worth every single minute for the view! From the first lookout, you can see over Palm Desert and Palm Springs. We continued on for awhile after that lookout... We only drove part of this byway but what we did was well worth it. We had started from Temecula , driving along 79 and 371 until we joined the byway east of Anza and continued eastwards towards Palm Springs. The scenery is wild and dramatic and every bend in the highway gives way to amazing vistas. We stopped at... More

I had not taken this entire trip in many years, and had forgotten how winding it is. The views are beautiful! The dramatic change in climate from the desert floor to snow on the ground in Idyllwild is just amazing to experience in such a short period of time. Be sure to stop at Vista Point for photos.
