We've rented in the La Quinta area for the past 5 winters, and heard about this place but didn't have it high on the list of "to do" activities. When we finally decided to check it out, we were blown away! It felt like a step back in time, and I expected huge dinosaurs popping out from the massive, ancient-looking... More

The gps didnt show the location so be prepared to use the old map. In this way very easy to find. It is a true oasis in the middle of nowhere. When we got there just 2 cars in the parking lot. The reserve was open but the visitors center closed for june to sept with a big warning of... More

An easy drive off Rte 10, you feel like you step back into time. Run by volunteers, a most non-commercial adventure awaits. I recommend going early in the day as parking is limited. There is a rustic cabin museum to stop in to leave your donation and explore. The walls are covered with photos and articles to read. Antique furniture... More

Beware!! Not the easiest to find...not a lot of signs, a little off the beaten path and can be intimating when it is 100+ degrees and your traveling paved back roads....but so worth the determination. Great old cabin remains from the first settlers. Volunteer was very very nice and knowledgeable! Amazing geological marvel in the middle of the desert. They... More

The palm oases in the Indio Hills can make a fascinating exploration. Fault activity has created an underground dam along the hills which pools water from the higher, southern aquifer. Where it comes to the surface, it has created a line of intermittent oases for about 10 miles. The Thousand Palms Oasis is the best to visit first - you... More

What a great way to start our day! After breakfast we enjoyed the park for 2 hours, birdwatching, walking and taking in the diversity of this wonderful park. A must-see when you are in Southern California. Remember to drop in your donation upon arrival.

Walking trail along a fault line. Desert, desert, desert, then oasis! Ancient pup fish. Very serene.

There are lots of hiking opportunities in and around Palm Springs and we did most of them. What we liked about Coachella is the low cost ($5 donation requested) and the fact that the perserve is maintained by volunteers. The wooden bridges and pathways through the palms make you feel like you wandered into an Indiana Jones movie. The visitor... More

There are several options for palm oasis hiking destinations outside Palm Springs, and Coachella Preserve is certainly one of the largest I've experienced, comparing those at Joshua Tree and Indian Canyons. The terrain is sandy desert, whereas you get into some more of the rocky terrains at the other locales. It's volunteer-staffed, and they are friendly and knowledgeable. Trails are... More
