Visited on a busy Thursday morning. School kids (4th graders) dressed in period dress were busy at various activities, candle making, spinning, cooking, grinding flour, etc. It was part of an extracurricular school program. It was really amazing to watch the kids. They were to spend the night there too. So, not only did we have the opportunity to visit... More

If you are staying in Sacramento, or any where in the Northern California area it is worth it to take a trip to Sutter's Fort. In addition to a wonderfuly kept historical monument, the fort provides an indication of what life was like on the Western Fronitier. In essence, though it wonderfully depicts the history of California, I found it... More

You can learn a lot about the history of the Sacramento area in less than two hours here. It's a self guided audio tour. It was also interesting to learn that the oldest building (structure) in CA is still standing and accessible in the center of this fort.

This was a great place to explore and learn. Lots of mock ups in the rooms so that they looked the way they did many years ago,Lots of historic props to teach how things were done way back when.

If your interested in gold rush era architecture and the trades practiced at the time, this is a nice stopping point to check out. It is set up for tourists primarily, with displays about the trades and practices of the time. Lots of informational displays and well as tools displayed as they would have been used.

This was the start of our tour of Gold Country. The fort wasn't crowded and there were docents dressed in period costumes who were able to answer our questions. We were provided with an interesting insight into the gold rush and life at that time. A good introduction to our few days of touring.

I'm originally from the Midwest, so it was interesting for me to go here to learn more about what the Settlers went through while traveling across country and what they had to deal with once they arrived in the area. Although it doesn't go into long detail about every single aspect of life, they had a lot of nice mini... More

We were lucky enough to visit on a day where a school group was engaged in living history lessons. It was fun to watch the students learn to lasso, dip candles, wash laundry and more. I don't know if it would have been nearly as interesting without them. The rooms are great to look at, but their experiences really made... More
