From a slice of life from a time when there were no roads to the former island trading post. Ted Smallwood’s store and Seminole trading post opened in 1906. The dock side store is still stocked with original goods, including hand-written ledgers, medicines and hides. Eerily, a life-size figure of Ted Smallwood still rocks in his favorite chair. Frontiersman and... More

This National Historic Landmark holds a lot of diverse history. When your in the building your literally surounded with historical items on all sides that are left and preserved over from when the building was used as an important tradingpost. There are many interesting little posted articles to read and it is nice getting the history from the musuem staff who... Going from east to west FL the old way or the modern I-75 way I have seen the sign for this museum and have always "meant" to get here. Decided to to a 2 day trip of the area. This is a priceless hidden gem of history and old Florida. See it -a big storm will certainly destroy it. I... More

We took a ride out onto Chokoloskee Island and discovered this little museum. We're so glad we did not miss it! It's just an old general store with items from the original general-store days, but it had very interesting information about those days and a really nice location. As I was standing on the back porch looking out at the... More

This place is certainly a good spot to check out. The history of how it came to be and all the local stories it tells inside are really cool. It has lots of neat stuff to look at too, especially for those who remember a lot of the old stuff in their. The only question mark is what the future... More

I agree with all the other reviews. Fun to see the old stuff and the old "general store" atmosphere.

Wind your way out to the end of the road to see this window into the history of the Everglades at this old trading post which is still owned by the family of the man who built it. Now run as a museum with a few books available for sale. It really captures a sense of what it was like... More

A funky family-run relic of a time gone by. If you have read the book Shadow Country - about the real 'bloody Ed Watson' who lived (and supposedly murdered) in this area, this is THE store and family who are a main character in the book. The museum gives you an idea what it was like to eke out a... More

This place has everything your grandmother ever had or told you about... They showed an outstanding video of Totch Brown, Gladesman "par excellence" which gave me a whole new avenue into South Florida's history... A granddaughter of the original Smallwood owner was full of enthusiasm and information... This place may not be for everyone, but if you like American history... More

A trip back in time to the 50's and 60's. Well worth it. Cost minimal, only $5.00. There was a writer, Rick Magers, on the premise signing his books. Buy one or just have a chat with him.
