Great trails for walking. Saw deer, alligators, a turkey, lots of beautiful birds. Others saw bison. Relaxing place to unwind after a day. Vistor Center closes early, but the park rangers at the security booth (who take your parking fee) can give you a map and recommendations. It's fun to be there at dusk and listen to the bullfrogs come... More

How have I never been here before now??? I've been to Gainesville so many times, I couldn't even count if forced. My ex's family is from there, my husband (and ex-husband) went to school at UF and we often go to UF Gator football games. I travel over Payne's Prairie every time coming from Orlando and as a family tradition... More

If you have people from up north who want to see a gator, this is the place. Have to find the trail but worth it once you get there. Peaceful and tropical with lots of wildlife to watch. We never miss taking people here when they visit.

Payne's Prairie is not a summer place -- broiling sun; hungry insects and ticks; prolific poison ivy; and sudden, drenching thunderstorms can nudge the balance of a Payne's Prairie experience toward the negative. From late fall through early spring, though, you'll love it. Hiking, running, camping, bicycling, canoeing, bird-watching, horseback riding, wildlife photography -- outdoor activities galore to introduce you... More

Payne's Pairre is an amazing place of wonder and adventure. We took moonlight bike rides on the white sandy trails that made us feel like we twelve again. We camped at the campground and even though we had a camper to as in we chose to sleep in our tent under the stars and woke to singing birds and chatty... More

We only visited the southern visitor's center and observation tower for an hour or so. The horses were there for us to watch. Many people told us to take the boardwalk on the northern part (3 mile round trip) to look for alligators, birds, and possibly bison. It is 22,000 acres, so you never know! Hopefully next time we can... More

Both are visible on a short walk on the boardwalk. Many varieties of birds can also be seen. Great for families

We rode the horses there on all the loops that allow for equines. Nicely maintained. Bring your coggins.

when we visited the sink hole on the North side of Paynes Prairie. You can get there by going East on Newberry Road (aka University Avenue). Turn right into SE 15th street and go ALLL the way down. On your right and left you'll see several residential areas. Keep driving. You will end up at the state park. We saw... More
