This lighthouse basically marks the point of seperation of the reef and open ocean. Plenty of spots to anchor and swim over to the reef. More

Our family returns here every time we are in the Keys. We take our own boat out there and tie up to an anchor point (they have a variety of locations). The reef spreads out from the lighthouse and depths range from fairly shallow (4-5ft.) to around 25-30ft. Our kids enjoy snorkeling, and we usually tie up a few floats... More

We rent boats and snorkel to avoid the crowds. Sombrero reef is the nicest in the area, and best in the early AM, before the crowded snorkel boats arrive. And most will moor up right next to you even if every other mooring ball is available. GO EARLY! More

the boat ride out to the reef was very nice and the scenery was beautiful. Once there the Captain was really helpful to new snorkelers explaining all the details of snorkeling and the fish were stunning! More

We went with Spirit snorkeling out of Marathon. The boat was a little crowded but the captain and crew were nice and helpful. The water was very clear but there was somewhat of a current so it took a little effort to stay near the boat. We saw more fish at Looe Key. More

I have never been snorkeling before and my friends and I were in Marathon on vacation, rented a boat for the day and ran out to this reef to snorkel. It was the most amazing thing, clear blue calm waters, fish all over, so close you almost touch them, and beautiful coral, although I didn;t dive down deep enough to... More

We spend about 2 weeks every summer in Marathon with the kids and our boat. We typically spend every weather permitting day snorkeling at either Sombrero Reef or Looe Key. Sombrero Reef is a great snorkel spot because it is shallow (8-25 ft) in depth, and has a wide variety of sea life. We bring our own boat and have... More
