Very scenic area with a heavy Greek influence. Dodecanese Street is full of shops selling sponges, soaps,Greek clothes, and has numerous Greek Restaurants along it with some of the finest cake bakers in all of the Gulf Coast region. Best tourist trips are the boat rides out to Anclote Key where if you are lucky you will see dolphins, ospreys, and... More

Am I the last one on earth to find out that there is a vibrant Greek community in Tarpon Springs? There's a long tradition of sponge diving, and the sponge docks along Dodocanese Street are lined with tourist shops and Greek restaurants. I was sorry we'd eaten breakfast just before we arrived, because the aromas wafting from the many restaurants... More

OK. So I was in Florida, famous for it's sunshine beaches and wild theme parks. I really wanted to see something less American, less of a franchise. After all Chillis in Seattle is much like the one in Miami. By accident we went to the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs and it was like being transported to a foreign land.... More

We really enjoyed our day that we spent here on vacation. We went to all the shops. There was a wide variety of shops to choose. Of course almost al of the sold sponges but that is what they are known for. I bought sponges to take to my friends. The people were so friendly.

We were visiting family not far from here and they recommened we come see the sponges. We ate lunch at one of the many greek restaurants and it was good. The shops weren't very exciting to say the least. Lots of cheap stuff to sell to the tourists, t-shirts, shells, SPONGES (didn't even buy one). There was only 1 nice... More

Yes, this place is tourist-y and with good reason. It is unique. Where else can you find a viable community of Greeks in Florida still working as they did in the "early days?" Apparently a few people from a Greek village came to Tarpon Springs and learned that the bay was shallow and full of sponges.....just like their hometown. So... More

We got to Tarpon Springs a little late in the day and drove through N Pinellas Avenue where we took pictures of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, famous for its Byzantine architecture. We were impressed by the Victorian-era mansions along Gulf Drive and Riverside Drive. We walked along the sponge docks and took photos of large nets bursting with sponges.... More

last time I was there went to some sort of museum and aquarium. old and dingy. if you like Greek food, which I dont, this is probably the place. As for the sponge dive exibition, i'm told they place the sponges on them bottom of the water the nite before.
