Begun in 1858, Fort Gorges was completed in 1865 just as the Civil War ended. During renovation in the late 1860s, sand and sod were added to the top level of its granite ramparts to protect its gun encasements and powder magazines from attacks. A beautiful small island at the entrance to Portland harbor that reminds us of Portland's rich history.
Wonderful views from here, and you can fool yourself into thinking you are defending the City from the Bad Guys in days of old. Also you would probably enjoy the Mail Boat ride around the Islands. Do not take my word for it...see for yourself.
A five minute water taxi trip to a deserted fort. Nothing less on the island except this fort. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to walk around. There is a little space/beach where you could cool off. A place on the rocks where you could have a picnic. Since the only way you can get there is by kayak...

Be prepared to have Fort Gorges to yourself! There are no guided tours, but you can schedule a water taxi from the Casco Bay area on Commercial Street in the Old Port. Be sure to set a time for the water taxi to come back and get you, or you will be stuck there! Better to go a high tide...

This is a really unique spot, a short boat ride from Falmouth or the eastern prom in Portland. Great place to explore that really gives you a glimpse into history. Definitely off the beaten path, everyone who goes to the eastern prom sees it, but few actually go.

Almost every year we bring new friends along for the experience and everybody always loves it. Being at the fort is like stepping back in time. It a surreal experience, very peaceful. Fort Gorges is only accessible...

The walking tour of the fort takes about 00:30 minutes and on the highest, southeast side of the fort there is a canon that has been left behind (the only one) and a panorama...
