The museum does a very good job of portraying life in Mi since the early days. i was particularly interested in the information about iron and copper mining. And I learned about the solar compass invented in order to map the Upper Peninsula. The large iron ore deposits made conventional compasses inaccurate.

A wonderful museum. You start with pre-white men and progress thru The French & Indian Wars, Statehood, Farming, Lumbering, to Manufacturing. Also the the wars from Civil War thru Vietnam are covered. Walking thru a colonial French fort and then a copper mine. Being inside a lumber mill and a automobile assembly plant. Walking down on a 1920 business street.... More

This museum is small, but its really good for kids. I would recommend going on a guided tour as you get a lot of extra information.

We made the trip here from Grand Rapids for a visit with four children, 2-8. It exceeded expectations and all four of our children were engaged for a couple of hours. Since we visited on Saturday, parking was free and we also received a discount for having the MI recreation pass, so our total entrance fee was $8. The museum... More

We were on a car history trip this year and stopped here based on comments in our AAA book. We were surprised there was a fee to enter the museum, but it was worth it. There is a lot more to see here than what we had time for this trip, but the museum is very well structured and the... More

I went with my three children, ages 19, 14 and 11. They went begrudgingly because they thought it would be boring because it's "history". But we all really enjoyed ourselves. There is something for everyone. Right now they have a special exhibit celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting. it is wonderful! It's a large exhibit with lots to see. This... More

Walks you through the history of Michigan from prehistory through 20th century. Great displays, including the walk through copper mine ,and one room school house. There are docents stationed throughout the museum who are more than happy to answer questions or provide additional information. Lots of hands on stuff so it's a great place for kids of all ages.
