If you like history this is a great place to visit. It is a fine example of "chateau-fort" architecture. First a defensive fortress then a prison modeled after the Bastille, this is not a welcoming kind of place. It was cold and hard, and that is what you get out of a visit -- the bare stone of the rooms... More

One of the first things that struck us was the picturesque location of the castle by the Rhone river. For a fee (can't remember what it was but it can't be very much EUR7 or something like that), one could wander around the castle. There isn't much by way of explanations and signs but we were impressed by the vastness... More

Built on top of a Roman ruin right by the Rhone, the chateau has a terrific view of Montagnette and the Alpille, the Rhone River, and Beaucaire. Once used as a prison it is now a huge tourist attraction well worth a visit. The round towers are especially impressive. Followers of Robespierre were thrown off the top in the late... More

This is actually typical medieval castle that was built in 15-th century. Of course there are standard fortification elements, a lot of “rooms”. One more plus: the tourist description in a few languages Unfortunately the castle, in fact, is practically empty, but this is financial problem, of course. For example, Loire castles are “live” and evidently it cost a lot... More

Almost every floor and room is open to the visitor to explore, although there is nothing in the rooms. The guide in English is pretty good, but if you also speak French and combine the two brochures for your visit, you will learn even more about this amazing medieval castle built in the 1400s. The view from the rooftop is... More

It is an amazing castle! Its long use as a prison is taken seriously, with various moving elements, including graffiti and proper drawings in the walls. Furthermore, we arrived when artists had placed modern works in many of the rooms, reflecting on this history - and on, of course, that of the Tarasce monster! The shop is excellent, too.

On a recent trip to Southern France, we had intended to visit Arles, Nimes and Avignon but a friend suggested taking the short trip from Avignon or Arles to Tarascon (about 20 minutes by bus or train). It opened my eyes to the plethora of great places that are close at hand in Southern France, even if you don't drive.... More

From the exterior the castle looks amazing - a square structure rising out of the rock directly on the edge of the river. The interior is somewhat confusing - mainly because of the very limited English guide leaflet which describes a route through 20 rooms. This was very confusing as, in places, rooms did not match those described. Clearly the... More

Spiral staircases, built on a major European river, towers, climb to top, fabulous views, little walled garden with fish pond. I've been here three times and still love it.

An outstanding castle, though unfurnished there is a lot to see and get a feel of the place. Worth a stop when in Avignon.
