Following alongside the Gallatin River, (one of the three tributary rivers which make up the Missouri River) the walls of the Gallatin Canyon go straight up to high mountains, alpine meadows and pine forests. The views are breathtaking and the chances of seeing wild animals (moose, big horn sheep, elk, coyotes, bears and an occasional wolf) is quite good. Please... More

The only way to get from Bozeman to Big Sky. This scenic drive follows the Gallatin River with the Madison Range and Gallatin Range towering over you on both sides.

The road down the canyon to big sky or yellowstone is an amazing drive. I make it frequently, and it is beautiful in all seasons. The smoke this summer has been a bit of a problem. In the winter I have seen several accidents due to black ice, or drivers misjudging the turns. There is also alot of wildlife on... More

The drive south on U.S. 191 from Bozeman to West Yellowstone/Yellowstone National Park offers enjoyable scenery, much of the trip right alongside the Gallatin River. It passes spur road to Big Sky, a nice drive up the mountain if you have time for a detour. The route offers a couple of decent restaurants, campsites, horseback riding, river rafting, and some... I love this drive, though in the winter it can be pretty scary. The mountains are beautiful and it's just a hop-skip-jump to Livinston and Yellowstone National Park.

I'm not sure why i'm rating the canyon but it is a very scenic drive to or from big sky resort and/or Bozeman. This road, however, is VERY dangerous. Cars are to 'hug' the white line to avoid collision (several crosses representing fatalities) drive the speed limit and stay focused. Chance of animal sightings and lots of fly fishers. Also... More

Gallatin Canyon is located about 18 miles south of the town of Bozeman, MT and has an abundance of recreational opportunities. You can fly fish the crystal clear waters of the Gallatin River for rainbow trout, or hike deep into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness if you're looking for a little solitude. Campgrounds are abundant along the canyon road (U.S. 191)... More

Moved here 2 years ago and this road is part of what brought me here. Lots of great rock climbing, fly fishing, hiking and scenery. Parts of "a river run through it" was filmed on this strech of the river. also if u turn down Spanish creek road there's a ton of Ted Turner's Buffalo that you can drive right... More

The Gallatin Canyon is a beautiful place with a rushing river through it. Be careful driving: the road twists and turns. Watch out for the moose which run across the road at night.
