Such a peaceful place! Religious or not, The Santuario is beautful. A rustic chapel with a lovely miraculous story. Visitors are able to take from the healing dirt and feel renewed. There is also a gift shop to visit. So much history in one small place. My family loved it!

I definitely recommend the short detour from Santa Fe or Taos to see this site. The church smells like a church should smell - candles and incense and wood. The interior is small with beautiful artwork that reflects the local culture. In a side room, you can see the displays of people who have been healed, including the crutches they... More

The Santuario is the site of a mass pilgrimage every Easter. Everywhere the shrine is filled with artifacts left by the faithful who have made the trek, from large wooden crosses to color photos of the departed, incarcerated or other loved ones deserving remembrance and/or redemption. Even for the agnostic or atheist, it is a window onto a living faith... More

The interior of El Santuario and the mass being done by Father James made my trip completely worthwhile. On a spiritual renewing journey sitting in the quiet was exactly what I needed. I don't know anything about the area surrounding it...I went into the gift shop to get a couple of postcards, took some outside photos and came away smiling.... More

As a devout and frequent visitor to El Santuario de Chimayo for the past 22 years, I that things have gone awry. In the past, the area surrounding El Santuario was remarkably unique. You could easily feel as if you were set down in an ethereal and humble setting somewhere out of the U.S. Some repairs needed to be made,... More

This is an interesting church with lots of history and a nice, quiet place to visit when in the Santa Fe area. Just down the road is a very good Mexican restaurant, Rancho de Chimayo, that was very accommodating when it came to making changes to our orders. Great staff. Two nice stops before going up to the galleries (like... More

I highly recommend the short detour to the Chimayo Sanctuary. The whole compound has remained quite authentic and mostly unspoiled. The sanctuary is quiet and infused with simple spirituality. I enjoyed the child-like depictions and folk art. Take home some holy soil or just enjoy the intact 19th century adobe architecture before you leave New Mexico.

The Santuario should not be missed by any visitor seeking to understand the culture of Northern NM. Located only about 30 minutes north of Santa Fe, this 1830s church is a window into the colonial past in a village that still retains many of its Hispanic traditions. The painted retablos, or altar screens, are national cultural treasures while the healing... More

The history of this place is lovely. People make pilgrimages to the site from all over & on many holy days, they apparently even do so on their knees, etc. The place itself is very peaceful, and although the site now has some commercial touches to it (colourful, cartoon-like maps, gift shops, etc), the actual Church and grounds are quite...
