This is a lovely ruin with gorgeous views of the mountains from atop the highest building! So many steep stairs to climb! We were lucky to have free admission the day we went. Cool off in the air conditioned museum afterwards.

Actually Tonina is nowhere near Chiapa de Corzo which is near Tuxtla Gutierrez the capitol. It is fairly close to the pueblo of Ocosingo however. While not as Spectacular as Palenque, it is definitely worth a visit. There is a new museum there with some very fine Mayan objects and they are still digging and discovering there. It is quite...

We stopped off at Toniná en route from San Cristóbal to Palenque, Chiapas’ two main tourist attractions. Judging by the limited number of visitors that we saw at Toniná, not many people do the same thing. We (my teen daughter and I) spent 2 ½ hours there and felt we got great insight into life at this Mayan city that...

We were urged to go to Tonina although it was not in our plans. We drove south from Palenque, stopping at Misol-Ha and Agua Azul, and booked into Hotel Margarita in Ocosingo. Next morning we drove the 10 miles or so through beautiful pastureland and into the Tonina site. There were a few guys with horses offering to take us...

Tonina has one of the largest pyramid temples in Mesoamerica. It is fascinanting and awe-inspiring when you first see it. The climb up the pyramid is really fun as you explore rooms and sculptures on the way up. At the top, the view is extraordinary. WOW!
If you are traveling between Palenque and San Cristóbal be sure to stop at Toniná. It's about 20 minutes from the highway on a good road, past a military base. The signs are easy to follow. (If you are using a Garmin GPS, just turn it off. It will try to send you every wrong way possible.)
Toniná is a...

Toniná is not far off the main highway between San Cristobal and Palenque. It is outside of the small friendly town of Ocosingo where you can spend the night and have an excellent dinner on the plaza at Las Delicias. The hotels there are modest, a reminder of traveling in Mexico in the 70s and 80s.
The ruins are scenically...

I enjoyed Tonina even more than the nearby Palenque. The surrounding area is beautiful and the ruin small and wonderful. We had a great Maya guide who expressed his pride in his culture and made the experience very special. His Spanish was very clear and the information valuable.
We visited Tonina the day before going to Palenque.
Tonina is known as the Underworld of the Mayas, their walk through to the other world. Seems it was also a jail back in the Maya times.
This place has been less studied and is less famous than Palenque, which means you will find muuuch less tourists. We arrived around 4pm...

We saw a mention of this place and decided to take a detour. It was totally worth it! Lots of ruins claim to be the tallest, but this one is said to be 20 stories high, even though they say it doesn't count because it is built on a hillside. It's still really impressive. It has a good ball court...
