My children and I loved learning about Dr. Ing Hay and his friend Lung On. All of his herbal remedies, including a bear paw remain as they were, when the Dr's. home was closed up in 1948. The obstacles the Dr. had to work around in his life were tremendous, yet he gained the trust of his patients through his... More

Very interesting museum, displays of the history of chinese imigrants in in the area. The origianal building has been scietifically evaluated, cleaned, and return to the state in which it was found. FREE tour, interesting, cool on a hot day, and accessable.

This museum alone is worth the trip out to John Day... I'm waiting for someone to write and make the Showtime or HBO series about this fascinating time period and of the two men who inhabited and ran the Kam Wah Chung. An oft unmentioned part of American History, the Kam Wah Chung museum does an excellent job of providing... More

Have gone to John Day many times over the years ans we never stopped, so one day we had our car worked on at Les Schwabs and decided to walk around and came across the museum. It was so informative that we want to come again as only the museum was open at the time.

This is a part of the national park system, admittance is free although you do need to sign up in advance for a time and get a ticket. I would suggest you allow time to see the short video(30 minutes) before you tour the house. Nice little gift shop and a grea deal of history of Oregon in that area.

Didn't know what to expect but this small state heritage museum is an interesting glimpse into the lives of the early Chinese immigrant workers in Oregon and the role they played in the cultural growth of rural communities such as John Day City. The fee is nominal for touring the actual store; the museum is free. DO THE TOUR.

Great litttle tour, that gives you a look back into the history of John Day. Very interesting, and they only ask for donations. Worth the time, to learn about the Chinese culture of the late 1800's.

We took a tour of this museum on our first day in John Day. The cool dark rooms of this old naturopath's shop and general store were a welcome relief from the warm weather. The tour takes you room by room through the actual store and living quarters of Doc hay and his assistant. The building had been closed up... More

In tiny John Day you will find this museum which is located in a building originally occupied i the 1880's. The building has been minimally restored to the way it was then and the inside is very close to the condition it was in back then. There is an Oregon Park Ranger at the interpretive center who conducts hourly tours... More
