Lots of local items sold there. Local arts including baskets, art, jewelry etc plus some food items and newer items. A good place to spend some time.
While recently in Charleston with a friend we made a special effort to visit the Old City Market. I have always heard that if you go to Charleston you can't miss this attraction. First, parking near the market is sparse unless you are willing to pay a lot so expect to spend some time trying to find a reasonable parking... More
This place is overrated. I thought it would be a fun place to find some interesting local treasures. I was wrong. It was a tourist trap. It seemed like a lot of vendors set up selling cheap tourist junk. Most of the products on sale just seemed to be low quality stuff. A lot was stuff you could buy anywhere... More
I recently visited the Old City Market in Charleston. While I had been here before, I was a little disappointed by the lack of good vendors. It used to be bustling, but now it has lost a lot of its orignality. I can say that I found beautiful sterling silver jewelry and great shea butter, and my friend bought a... More
You need to allow 2 hours for this shopping experience. You will see a large variety of things including many local art and crafts. Prices were very good as well. This is right on Market Street and there is a parking garage only one block away. Expect to pay $10 for 3-4 hours of parking in downtown Charleston. You can... More
Two blocks of stalls in old Charleston - fun. Great local crafts - art work, gorgeous sweet grass baskets, gullah dolls, beer brittle and so much more. Take the time to meander through the market and delight in unusual finds. Of course there are the usual tourist souvenirs but most items are unusual and handmade.
The Old City Market is a nice place to go to people watch and check out some of the sites. It has a lot of different things to offer. Some of the vendors offer some of the typical touristy stuff, but then you will also find the classic sweet grass baskets, old style spices or nice jewelry and art work.... More
There are so many different crafts, foods, types of art and just about anything you are looking for here. A great way to get a glimpse of Charleston culture.
Years ago, this was a place with just baskets. Reading these other reviews, it appears that the reviewers saw lots of "tacky" things. I would say..there is a wide range of items available for purchase. Yes, you have the obligatory key chains and magnets. There's tacky jewelry, but there is also affordable (and beautiful) sterling silver jewelry. There's prints of... More
Markets reflect the character, the vibrancy of a city. They are where you will find fresh local produce, fruit and vegetables, preserves, jellies, confectionery, honey, meats and flowers. It's a meeting place often embellished by music and street entertainment. The Old City Market displays none of these essential ingredients. The Saturday market at Marion Square is closer to the real... More
